Mira Gavrana's novel deals with the theme of individual lack of freedom in a totalitarian society. The plot is set in a fictional country and is reminiscent of the Orwellian year 1984, a symbol of repression and surveillance.
The main character is a young intellectual who, due to his views and critical thinking, comes into conflict with the authorities. He is arrested and imprisoned without a fair trial. In prison, he undergoes psychological and physical trials, interrogations and attempts at re-education. The authorities try to break his personality, force him to renounce his beliefs and confess to a crime he did not commit. During his time in prison, he meets other prisoners who are also victims of the regime. Through their fates, the author depicts the fear, distrust and loneliness that prevail in a society under constant surveillance. Despite the pressures, the main character internally resists the system, preserving his dignity and faith in freedom. The novel speaks about the importance of freedom of thought, the courage of the individual and the dangers of totalitarian regimes. The message of the work is that truth and freedom cannot be completely destroyed, even in the most difficult circumstances.
