Jasen Boko

Through travelogues and personal accounts, Jasen Boko describes South America – a continent of contrasts, passion and unrest. Combining history, culture and personal reflections, he searches for what it means to be “at home” in the world.

The Fifth Side of the World is a travelogue by Jasen Boka, written during his months-long journey through South America. Through countries such as Argentina, Chile, Bolivia and Peru, the author describes not only places and people, but also his own journey towards understanding the world and himself.

The title “fifth side of the world” is a symbol of the place where all the points of the compass intersect – the point at which a person ceases to be just a traveler and becomes an observer of meaning. Boka combines a reportage style, historical digressions, social commentary and an introspective tone, creating a work that is at once a travelogue, an essay and a philosophical quest.

Through encounters with local residents, scenes of construction and poverty, carnivals and revolutions, the author reflects on the identity of the individual in a globalized world. He writes about differences and similarities, about beauty and cruelty, about the freedom found in movement.

At the heart of the book is not only a geographical journey, but also an internal one — a search for a way to understand a constantly changing world. Boko wonders if a person can even belong to one place, or if belonging is a feeling we carry with us.

The Fifth Side of the World combines fact and poetry, testifying to the author's unique perspective on culture, society, and human nature. It is a deeply personal yet universal book about a world without borders and a journey that brings us back to ourselves.
