Nova Harfa Siona: Zbirka pojanja i slavopoja za skupštine verujućih u Hrista

The New Harp of Zion is a collection of spiritual songs and hymns for congregations of Nazarene (evangelical) believers. It contains hymns for prayer and communal singing, with musical notation. A classic Protestant hymnal for the Serbian-speaking world.

The New Harp of Zion – a collection of hymns and praises for the congregations of believers in Christ is the third revised edition from 1896, published in Novi Sad. It is a significant spiritual hymnal of evangelical Christians, primarily members of the Nazarene (Apostolic-Christian) community in the area of Vojvodina, Serbia and the wider Balkans.

The book is a translation and adaptation of the famous German Nazarene hymnal Neue Zionsharfe (New Harp of Zion). It contains hundreds of spiritual songs intended for communal singing at religious gatherings – prayers, worship services and home meetings. The songs cover the themes of praise to God, salvation through faith in Jesus Christ, conversion, baptism, holy living and eschatological hope.

The collection was published in several editions during the late 19th and early 20th centuries (second edition around 1886, third in 1896, fourth in 1913 in the printing house of Dr. Svetozar Miletić in Novi Sad). The third edition contains musical notations with the texts, which enabled accurate learning and singing of the melodies, typical of the Protestant tradition where song is the central part of the worship service.

The style of the songs is simple, direct and emotional – it emphasizes a personal relationship with God, repentance, the brotherhood of believers and separation from worldly life. The language is Serbian (ekavica or ikavica depending on the edition), adapted to the common people, often with biblical motifs and allusions to the New Testament.

In the historical context, the New Harp of Zion was an important means of spiritual formation and identity of the Nazarene community in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The Nazarenes were persecuted for their pacifism, refusal to take the oath and military service, and the hymnal served them as spiritual food and a symbol of unity. The work belongs to the broader tradition of 19th-century evangelical hymnology and remains an important document of the religious culture of the Serbs and other peoples in the Danube region.
