Eric Van Lustbader

"The Second Skin" is a novel by Eric Van Lustbader, a well-known author of thrillers and action novels. This novel, like many others in his career, explores themes of identity, spiritual struggle, and the interference of the past with the present.

The plot of the novel "The Second Skin" focuses on the main protagonist, whose life soon becomes complicated due to complex relationships with past events, dangerous enemies and his own inner demons. The story deals with deep questions about how the past shapes our identities and how we deal with our own secrets and deeds.

Nicholas Linnear is threatened with the destruction of his business empire and his soul. The investigation into the theft of his perfect computer technology leads him, as well as his friend Lew Croaker, into a labyrinth of terrifying connections between the mafia, the Japanese Yakuza and the Government. Nicholas's trail first leads to Vietnam, brilliantly portrayed as the jungle of new capitalism, and the search for the missing Kaisha, Miki Okami, leads him back to Japan. There he has to face dismissal. During this time, Croaker became deeply involved in the affairs and past of two organized crime families. Johhny Leonfote can take his life at any moment, and Margarite Goldoni has already taken his heart...

The book is tense and rich in action moments, but at the same time explores deeper psychological and philosophical aspects. Through his characters, Lustbader explores ideas about what it means to wear a "second skin", that is, how people hide behind their facades, hiding their real feelings, thoughts and motives.

The novel combines the elements of a psychological thriller, action and mystery, and readers are drawn into a story that includes many ambiguities and unexpected twists, maintaining tension until the very end.
