Otkriće sveta u stripu #3: Marko Polo

Andre Berelović, Jean Ollivier

The comic tells the story of the life and travels of Marco Polo, the famous Venetian explorer. The comic was illustrated by Ennio Missaglia, while the script was written by Mino Milani. The story is based on Polo's work Il Milione, which describes his tra

The comic follows Marco Polo from his departure from Venice in 1271 with his father Nicolò and uncle Matteo, through Central Asia to the court of Kublai Khan in China. It depicts encounters with Mongol rulers, the splendor of Eastern cities such as Samarkand and Beijing, and wonders such as silk and paper money. Marco serves Kublai Khan as a diplomat, traveling through China and India, recording cultural and economic characteristics. After 24 years, he returns to Venice (1295), where his stories, told while imprisoned in Genoa, are recorded by Rustichello da Pisa.

The comic emphasizes Polo's role in connecting East and West, but also the skepticism of his contemporaries towards his descriptions. Visually rich, with historical details, it educationally depicts the 13th century. The antiquarian value of the 1980 edition is significant due to its rarity and quality of workmanship.
