Pripovijesti i pričanja

Stjepan Mitrov-Ljubiša

Tales and Stories (1875) is a collection of prose texts by Stjepan Mitrov Ljubiša, one of the most important 19th-century Serbian writers from the Bay of Kotor. The book contains Tales by Vuk Dojčević and Tales from Montenegro and the Coast.

The collection includes short stories, sketches and folk tales that depict the life, customs and spirit of Boka Bay, especially Prčanj, the author's birthplace. Ljubiša, known for his realism and vernacular, brings stories imbued with humor, irony and a deep understanding of human nature, often inspired by oral tradition.

The action takes place in a coastal setting, where maritime adventures, love stories and social intrigues intertwine. Key short stories, such as Skočidjevojka, Kanjoš Macedonović and Pop Anto, depict colorful characters – sailors, merchants, priests and ordinary people – who face moral dilemmas, love and fate. Ljubiša masterfully uses the Boka dialect, enriched with localisms, which gives authenticity and charm to his texts. Themes include the conflict between tradition and modernity, honor, justice and togetherness, with a subtle criticism of social injustices.

The collection is notable for its ethnographic value, preserving the culture and folklore of Boka Bay. Ljubiša's style, imbued with warmth and wit, makes the work universal, while his ability to capture the soul of the people leaves a lasting mark on Serbian literature.
