U zemlju obećanja: Knjige Jošua, Suci i Ruta

Into the Land of Promise (Books: Joshua, Judges, and Ruth) is yet another valuable work from the extensive biblical corpus of the prominent Croatian theologian and Franciscan Friar Celestin Tomić. In this study, the author examines a dramatic period of Old Testament history encompassing the Chosen People's entry into Canaan, their arduous establishment in the region, and the transition from a tribal structure to a monarchy. Following the Book of Joshua, Tomić analyzes the military and religious aspects of the conquest and the division of the land among the tribes, emphasizing that the entry into the Promised Land is primarily the fulfillment of God's promise to Abraham. In the section dedicated to the Book of Judges, the author depicts a turbulent era lacking a unified ruler—a time marked by the people's repeated lapses into idolatry, crises, and the rise of charismatic leaders (judges) who bring deliverance. The analysis of the Book of Ruth—a brief yet exceptionally significant biblical episode—offers a contrast to these times of war and upheaval. Through the figure of Ruth, the Moabite daughter-in-law, Tomić highlights themes of family loyalty, kindness, and inclusivity, pointing to her pivotal role in the genealogy of David. This work combines historical context with profound theological thought, offering the reader a clearer understanding of God's presence in human history.
