Djela Augusta Šenoe - Zagrebulje i drugi feljtoni

August Šenoa

A collection of newspaper articles in which the author vividly describes life in 19th-century Zagreb, criticizes social injustices, and promotes cultural, moral, and civic progress.

“Zagrebulje i drugi feuilletoni” (Zagrebulje and other feuilletoni) is a series of newspaper articles published by August Šenoa in Croatian newspapers during the second half of the 19th century. In them, Šenoa shows himself not only as a writer but also as a social chronicler, moralist and humorous observer of everyday life in Zagreb. Through characters, situations and anecdotes, he captures the spirit of the times, building a vivid picture of a city that is rapidly growing and modernizing, but at the same time facing a series of moral and social problems.

The central theme of these feuilletons is a depiction of the lives of the “little man” – craftsmen, merchants, clerks and citizens – and their struggle to find their place in the changes. Šenoa shows great understanding for their weaknesses, but at the same time he sharply points out the hypocrisy, corruption, petty flaws and social irresponsibility that hinders progress. As a writer and editor, he advocated the idea that a writer should be the moral voice of the nation, directing the public towards enlightenment, work and honesty.

In his “Zagrebulje” feuilletons, Šenoa combines criticism and humor, creating a style that is both entertaining and socially engaged. His Zagreb is not just a scene of events, but a living organism that reflects the complexity of Croatian society at the time. In this way, Šenoa, in addition to being a novelist and poet, also established his role as a journalist – the first modern Croatian feuilletonist, whose images of the times are still valuable testimony to the cultural history of our city and people.
