Kobo Abe

Kobo Abe

Japanese writer (Tokyo, March 7, 1924 – Tokyo, January 22, 1993), real name Abe Kimifusa. Raised in Manchuria; after studying medicine in Tokyo (1948) he devoted himself to literature. Wrote poems, novels, essays and plays; directed experimental films. Based on Western models (especially Kafka), he achieved his own literary expression: themes of loneliness, nihilism and the conflict of generations are mostly expressed in bizarre and allegorical situations. Works: Signpost at the End of the Street (Owarishi michi no shirube ni, 1948), Woman on the Shore (Suna no onna, 1962), Secret Meetings (Mikkai, 1977), Whales Rushing to Death (Shi ni isogu kujiratachi, 1986).
