Natalia Ginzburg je u ovom djelu nastojala izbjeći bilo kakvo miješanje mašte i stvarnosti, sve su ličnosti prikazane pravim imenom i prezimenom, a među njima su i mnoga značajna imena u političkom, socijalnom, ekonomskom i kulturnom životu Italije. Tako je to djelo i neka vrst kronike antifašizma, gledanog očima jedne djevojčice. Ali ono ujedno odiše takvim humanizmom, vedrinom i nadom u bolju budućnost kao sigurno malo koja knjiga pisana na tu temu.
