In the 1960s, Joža Horvat became increasingly interested in ships and the sea, and decided to embark on a great maritime adventure. With his crew, wife Renata, son Marko and Vladimir Hrlić, he sailed around the world from August 1965 to July 1967. After his return, he collected published texts and reports in Vjesnik u sredu and Split's Mohućnost, and transformed the ship's log into a literary text.

His most famous work in the world is the travelogue "Besa - brodski dnevnik", based on notes from a voyage around the world on the sailing ship Besa. Since its first edition in 1973, this work has gone through about 10 editions and translations into many world languages.
