Die Hauptfigur des Romans ist Korporal Ilija Kapar, ein Kriegsheld, dem Horvats Humor(ismus) Frische verleiht und ihm Leichtigkeit bei der Bewältigung der Kriegstragödie verleiht. In achtzehn Kapiteln werden ebenso viele Kriegsabenteuer Ilias erzählt, denen jeweils eine kurze, humorvoll intonierte Zusammenfassung vorangestellt ist. Der Roman wurde auch für Film und Fernsehen adaptiert.
