Branka / Karanfil s pjesnikova groba / Čuvaj se senjske ruke

August Šenoa

The novel "Branka" by August Šenoa was published in 1881 and is one of his best-known works, set in the context of Croatian society in the 19th century.

The main character, Branka, is a young and educated girl from Zagreb. After her father dies, the family faces financial problems. Branka decides to get a job as a teacher in a small village with the goal of ensuring her own existence and contributing to society through the education of children.

The peasants in the village initially look at Branka with distrust because of her modernity and education. The local community is backward and under the influence of a corrupt pastor, who makes it difficult for Branka to work. However, with her work and dedication, Branka manages to win the trust and love of the children and some of the locals.

Throughout the novel, Šenoa shows the conflict between tradition and progress and emphasizes the importance of education, especially for women. With her strength of character, morality and intellect, Branka overcomes prejudices and leaves a strong impression in the conservative environment.

The novel ends optimistically, sending Šenoa a message about the importance of courage, perseverance and belief in one's ideals, even when the environment is unfavorable.
