Zavodnik i druge priče

Knut Hamsun

The central story "The Tempter" follows a young seducer on a trip: he tries to win Andrea, but the game of seduction ends in tension, love and loss - a symbol of Hamsun's exploration of lust and self-deception. The other stories vary: love dramas such as "The Queen of Sheba", "Slaves of Love", "Alexander and Leonard" or "The Dreamer" (a short novel about dreams and reality); minimalist sketches in the American style - "On the Prairie", "A Woman's Victory", "Fear", "From a Tramp Life" - full of authentic characters and unusual events; the fantastic "The Phantom"; the poetic "The Voice of Life" and "The Ladies of Tivoli"; treatises such as "Son of the Sun".

In the stories we find autobiographical motifs, the cycle of destruction and creation, the motif of the city as a disease of the soul - Hamsun paints man as a "sick child of the city", with a lot of irony and mysticism. Kovač highlights Hamsun's Nazism as an irrational stain, but celebrates his narrative genius as an eternal star. The collection is a bridge between the 19th century and modernism: confusing yet liberating, a reminder that every story is a mirror of the unconscious. Ideal for lovers of introspective prose – from the chaos of the heart to the moment of enlightenment.
