Irwin Shaw

The Night Job follows a former pilot who, due to vision problems, works as a night porter in a New York hotel. Entangled in a world of gambling, wealth and fraud, he tries to turn his life around.

The Night Job (1975) is a novel by Irwin Shaw that intertwines psychological drama, crime plot, and social criticism. The main character Douglas Grimes was once a successful pilot, but his eyesight is deteriorating and he is forced to abandon his profession. He takes a job as a night porter in a dilapidated hotel in New York, where he observes the lives of guests from the shadows and gets to know the dark side of the metropolis.

A seemingly insignificant job gradually introduces him to the world of wealthy gamblers, shady businessmen, and international con artists. An unexpected event gives him the opportunity to change his fate, but at the same time puts him in front of a series of moral dilemmas. Grimes travels between the United States and luxury European resorts, where he meets people driven by greed, ambition, and the desire for power. Through a tense plot, Shaw explores how money and success can change an individual's character and how fragile happiness and honesty are in a world ruled by interest and chance.

The novel abounds in dynamic dialogue, unexpected twists, and compelling psychological portraits of characters. In addition to its crime thriller elements, The Night Job also brings reflections on lost opportunities, personal responsibility, redemption, and the search for a new beginning, making it one of Shaw's more mature and complex prose works.
