Choderlos de Laclos

Pierre Ambroise François Choderlos de Laclos (Amiens, October 18, 1741 – Taranto, September 5, 1803) was a French writer, military officer, and political figure, best known for his epistolary novel Dangerous Liaisons (Les Liaisons dangereuses, 1782)—one of the most significant works of 18th-century French literature. Trained as a military engineer and artillery officer, he spent the greater part of his life in military service, while also participating in the political and social upheavals leading up to and during the French Revolution.

He achieved literary fame with Dangerous Liaisons, a work that offers a psychologically incisive and socially critical analysis of aristocratic morality, manipulation, seduction, and power dynamics. The novel is structured as a collection of letters that reveal the schemes of the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont—two unscrupulous members of high society. Their games of seduction and revenge gradually lead to tragic consequences. Distinguished by its polyphonic narrative structure, psychological complexity, and critique of social hypocrisy, the work is considered the pinnacle of the French epistolary novel.

In addition to his most famous novel, Laclos published a treatise titled On the Education of Women (Des femmes et de leur éducation, 1783), in which he examines the status of women, education, and social inequality. He also wrote poetry, literary criticism, political texts, and military treatises—most notably the Letter to the Academy of Châlons-sur-Marne (Lettre à l'Académie de Châlons-sur-Marne, 1786), which addresses issues of military strategy and artillery.

During the French Revolution, he was associated with the Duke of Orléans and Jacobin political circles, and later served in Napoleon’s army. He died of illness while on military service in southern Italy.

Laclos’s literary legacy rests primarily on the novel Dangerous Liaisons, a work that left an enduring mark on European literature through its exploration of human psychology, sexual politics, moral hypocrisy, and the destructive power of manipulation. The novel has been the subject of numerous theatrical, cinematic, and literary adaptations.
