Bernard Samson hunts for another Soviet mole inside British intelligence. With his wife already in the East, the investigation threatens his career, family and trust in his colleagues.
Having persuaded Soviet intelligence officer Erich Stinnes to defect, Bernard Samson hopes to obtain information that will give his Service an advantage. Instead, evidence emerges that another traitor may be operating within British intelligence itself.
The arrest of Soviet courier Elvira Miller in West Berlin raises questions about secret information sent from London under two code names. One trail leads to Samson’s wife Fiona, who has defected to the East. The other points towards an unidentified source, placing everyone under suspicion—including Samson, whose private circumstances have already undermined his colleagues’ confidence.
Moving between London and Berlin, he must distinguish genuine intelligence from deliberate deception. Protecting his family becomes inseparable from discovering the truth, while distrust within the Service drives him towards increasingly dangerous decisions.
London Match concludes the trilogy begun with Berlin Game and Mexico Set. Len Deighton combines Cold War intrigue with professional rivalry, marital betrayal and divided loyalties. In this world, an operational success offers little protection when the greatest danger may come from one’s own side.
