The work is based on the author's personal experiences as a lawyer in the provinces, mostly in the town of Jastrebarsko, which he calls Žabarje.
Among the Frogs is a brilliant satire that, through comic and grotesque scenes, provides serious social criticism of the Croatia of that time. Ante Kovačić skillfully depicts the hypocrisy and stupidity of provincial society, but does not hide his disappointment at the stagnation of Croatian society as a whole. The work is still relevant today due to its universal themes and sharp, incisive language.
