Žrtvovanje čarolije u svijetu Ivane Brlić Mažuranić

Žrtvovanje čarolije u svijetu Ivane Brlić Mažuranić

Sanja Lovrenčić

The essays collected in this book reveal the origins and meanders of Sanja Lovrenčić's years-long search for the authentic character of Ivana Brlić Mažuranić.

From her own "practice of the world" – which integrates the experiences of a writer, translator, editor and publisher – Sanja Lovrenčić recounts how Ivana's letters to her father inspired her to write the biographical novel In Search of Ivana, how reader reactions then led her to publish Ivana's girlhood diary Good morning, world!, and how Sandra Gilbert and Suzana Gubar's study The Madwoman in the Attic encouraged her to shape her research into lectures on which this book is based. Explaining the palimpsest character of women's writing, the permanent tension between intimate discomfort and public alibis for writing, the author does not construct "her own Ivana", but rather reads "Ivana's Ivana" - from the feminist key with which she "unlocks" Tales from the Past, through the comparative portrait of Gita and the "artist in her youth" from Ivana's diary, to the complete disillusionment of literary and private worlds... The essay proves to be an extremely flexible genre that allows the author to address a wide audience not only through careful analyses but also through introspective inserts, imaginary dialogues and a cycle of poems that concludes the book.
