Volite li Brahmsa?

Thirty-nine-year-old Paule is torn between her addiction to unfaithful partner Roger and the passionate affection of the much younger Simon, in a touching story about loneliness and the fear of aging.

The novel Aimez-vous Brahms... (1959) is one of Françoise Sagan’s most renowned and mature works. Set within elegant Parisian circles, the novel explores the subtle nuances of romantic relationships, emotional emptiness, and the inexorable passage of time. At the heart of the story is Paula, an accomplished and attractive interior designer who has spent years in a lackluster relationship with a businessman named Roger. Although he loves her, Roger avoids deep commitment and regularly cheats on her with younger women, leaving Paula in a state of quiet resignation and loneliness. This settled routine is disrupted by the arrival of Simon, the twenty-five-year-old son of a wealthy client. Impulsive, romantic, and captivated by Paula, Simon courts her with carefree passion and invites her to a concert with the question: "Do you like Brahms?" This seemingly simple question awakens a long-forgotten youth within Paula and compels her to re-examine her life. Although she accepts Simon’s affection, a sense of social stigma and the fear of the relationship’s inevitable end constantly hold her back. With exceptional psychological precision, Sagan portrays how habit and the fear of the unknown often draw us back into familiar—albeit unhappy—circumstances.
