Slike iz svjetske književnosti I: Pjesnički prvaci u prvoj polovini XIX. vieka
The book represents a pioneering contribution to the study of world literature in the Croatian language. In its original Art Nouveau binding, it is a valuable example of literary historiography.
This first volume in a series examines the key poets of Romanticism, a period marked by strong emotional expression, individualism, and inspiration from folk traditions. The work provides biographies and analyses of the literary works of leading European poets of the first half of the 19th century, including Lord Byron, Adam Mickiewicz, Alexander Pushkin, Jan Kollár, Giacomo Leopardi, Henrik Heine, and Victor Hugo.
The authors provide detailed accounts of their lives, artistic trajectories, and significant works, placing them in the context of the Romantic spirit that dominated Europe. The book highlights the diversity of poetic expression—from Byron’s rebelliousness and Pushkin’s lyricism to Mickiewicz’s national epic and Heine’s satirical sharpness.
Šrepel and Adamović explore how these poets shaped the literary movements of their countries, as well as the wider European cultural space. Special attention is paid to the connection between their works and socio-historical circumstances, such as national revivals and the struggle for freedom.
