Roman predstavlja Tolstojevu obradu Pinocchija Carla Collodija; ideju za roman je dobio kao dijete, kada su mu pročitali samo prvi dio knjige, pa je ostatak izmislio sam.

U Tolstojevoj verziji je glavni protagonist lutak po imenu Buratino. Roman je doživio veliku popularnost, a Buratino postao jedna od ikona sovjetske popularne kulture. Nekoliko puta je ekraniziran. "Kad je lutku napravio oči, one se odjedanput otvoriše i zagledaše u Karla. On ničime nije pokazao da se uplašio, nego je nastavio s poslom. Izrezao je i obraščiće, bradicu i nos, koji se iznenada počeo istezati, sve dok nije postao dug i oštar. Ali čim mu je Karlo napravio trup, Buratino ga je počeo mlatiti pesnicama po glavi, štipati i škakljati."
