Šenoa, following the tradition of the Croatian historical novel, combines sentimental-romantic elements with political intrigue, depicting the political life of Croatia in an organic connection with the problems that prevented its full development. Through characters and events, the novel revives the spirit of the times, emphasizing the importance of preserving national identity and independence.
