Miljenko Jergović

The cult book by Miljenko Jergović – a subjective history of a time, country and city... A historical reader is actually a family album because a person always becomes familiar with people in a time that has passed and which they want to explain.

This book is not about real events, but about the memory of real events and the strategy of forgetting. It contains misremembered names and years, some cities have become other cities, and the faces of Zenica smelters have disappeared from banknotes and the faces of Husinj miners have appeared. There is probably some rule according to which a person remembers and forgets, but since stories about memory are usually history or fiction, we avoid thinking about such rules.

A historical reader is neither history nor fiction, but a list of what still exists as an inventory of a completely subjective history of a city, country and time. Like any list, this one should strive for precision. It does not embellish, does not process or create anything, but lists, as long as there is something to list. It contains repetitions and those emotions that any serious story about time would be ashamed of, but family photo albums are not ashamed of.
