Rodoljub Čolaković

Telling the Story of a Generation is a memoir trilogy by Rodoljub Čolaković that follows the path of Yugoslav communists between the two world wars, from emigration to the eve of World War II, through personal experience.

Narrative of a Generation is a comprehensive memoir trilogy by Rodoljub Čolaković in which the author, as a direct participant in political and social events, reconstructs the path of his generation – from the revolutionary enthusiasm of his youth, through the emigrant years and the international communist movement, to his return to Yugoslavia on the eve of World War II. Combining personal memories with historical facts, Čolaković brings a vivid testimony of the people, ideas and events that marked a turbulent period in European history.

The central part of the trilogy is the second book, which follows the author's stay in the Soviet Union from 1933 to 1936. After his emigrant journey, he gets to know Soviet everyday life, the life of Moscow and the complex circumstances in a country that for many represented the realization of revolutionary ideals. A special place is occupied by his education at the International Lenin School, where communists from different countries gather, exchange experiences and prepare for political work.

Čolaković describes firsthand his encounters with prominent revolutionaries, the work of the Communist International, the atmosphere of the 7th Congress of the Comintern, and the challenges faced by Yugoslav communists in exile. After his return, he takes on the role of instructor of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia, and the story ends in an atmosphere of anticipation of the great political changes that will soon sweep across Europe.

Written in a calm, documentary style, The Story of a Generation is at once a personal confession, a chronicle of a political generation, and a valuable historical source that sheds light on the activities of the Yugoslav communist movement between the two world wars.
