Françoise Sagan’s second novel, A Certain Smile (Un certain sourire, 1956), confirmed her status as a unique voice in 1950s French literature. The work offers a subtle, intimate study of the transience of passion, disillusionment, and emotional maturation. The story follows Dominique, a twenty-year-old law student in Paris leading a rather dull and predictable life in a relationship with Bertrand, a caring young man of her own age. Her monotony is interrupted by a meeting with Bertrand’s uncle, Luc—a charming, wealthy, and significantly older man happily married to the gentle Françoise. Despite moral qualms and a mutual understanding that theirs is merely a brief, no-strings-attached fling, Dominique and Luc embark on an affair, spending two passionate weeks in the south of France. Upon returning to Paris, Luc slips back into his family life without drama, while Dominique is left to confront the emptiness and unexpectedly deep feelings that linger within her. With remarkable ease and her signature wistful tone, Sagan depicts the moment when youthful indifference gives way to the first true pangs of heartbreak, leaving the heroine with nothing but "a certain smile" as a shield against the world.
