Ni svi kitovi ne lete

Not All Whales Fly is a narrative gem by the acclaimed contemporary Portuguese writer, illustrator, and musician Afonso Cruz, published in Croatian translation in 2020. The novel introduces us to a distinctive, melancholic, yet incredibly warm world where the destinies of an unusual family and their neighbors intertwine. Through a signature style—a blend of poetic expression, gentle humor, and profound philosophical reflection—Cruz explores the nature of human relationships, memories, and the invisible bonds that connect us. The titular metaphor of whales symbolizes heaviness and longing—the obstacles that keep us grounded—as well as the inner strength to take flight against all odds. With great empathy, the author portrays characters grappling with personal loss, loneliness, and the search for their own place in the world, while everyday, seemingly trivial events take on an almost magical significance. This moving story invites the reader to slow down and reflect on what truly matters in life: love, understanding, and the right to dream. Cruz once again confirms his status as a master of contemporary literature, effortlessly addressing the deepest questions of human existence.
