Španjolske pripovijetke
The 1949 representative selection, "Spanish Short Stories," offers a rich insight into Spanish prose, encompassing both classical and modernist works imbued with passion, tradition, and profound humanity.
The collection "Spanish Short Stories" (Španjolske pripovijetke), published in 1949, represents a carefully curated anthology that introduces the domestic readership to the richness, diversity, and distinct characteristics of Spanish short prose. This edition features stories by some of the most significant Spanish writers, offering a comprehensive overview of the evolution of Spanish narrative art across various stylistic and historical periods. The selected stories are imbued with a distinctly Spanish spirit—a blend of profound emotional intensity, dramatic flair, religious and folk traditions, as well as sharp social critique and psychological character analysis. Through a diverse range of themes and motifs—from realistic depictions of everyday life in the Spanish provinces to visionary and symbolic narratives—the collection explores the complexities of human nature, the constraints of tradition, the experience of loneliness, and the moral dilemmas faced by its characters. As one of the earlier post-war translations of Spanish prose in this region, this book played a vital role in bridging cultural gaps and acquainting readers with the finest achievements of Iberian literature. "Spanish Short Stories" remains a valuable testament and an enduring resource for all admirers of world literary heritage.
