Nakon razočaranja u ljubavi, Stefani odlučuje da se pridruži zouama kao konobarica tokom Krimskog rata. Tamo je zarobljavaju Rusi, ali zahvaljujući strasti ruskog oficira Borisa uspeva da se spase. Njihova kratka, ali intenzivna ljubavna veza ostavlja dubok trag na nju. Po povratku u Pariz, Stefani se suočava sa osećajem praznine jer je njena prva ljubav sada udata, a Boris je daleko. Njena potraga za uzbuđenjem odvodi je na bojna polja Italije, gde je svedok krvave bitke kod Solferina. Tamo upoznaje Andre de Burdeja, sa kojim pronalazi kratkotrajnu sreću. Roman istražuje teme ljubavi, strasti i potrage za smislom u turbulentnim vremenima.​
