Upon returning to Paris, Stéphanie faces a feeling of emptiness because her first love is now married and Boris is far away. Her search for excitement takes her to the battlefields of Italy, where she witnesses the bloody Battle of Solferino. There, she meets André de Bourdeilles, with whom she finds short-lived happiness. The novel explores themes of love, passion, and the search for meaning in turbulent times.
