Zane Grey

Grey's most poetic work – an ode to the red desert, love, and spiritual awakening.

A young Easterner, Jack Hare, seriously ill with tuberculosis, arrives in the deserts of southern Utah seeking salvation in the dry air. He is found unconscious by rancher August Naab, a devout Mormon with five sons and a large estate on the edge of red canyons. Naab rescues him and takes him into his family, where Jack slowly recovers and transforms into a strong cowboy.

He meets the mysterious Mescal – a beautiful girl of Navajo-Indian descent whom Naab keeps as an adopted daughter, but who is engaged to his eldest son Snap. In the background, the cruel rancher Holderness, the “father of rust”, threatens to steal cattle and take over the entire region. His ally is the vile Dene, a spy who is hunting Mescal.

Jack falls in love with Mescal and clashes with Snap Naab. When Holderness kidnaps Mescal, Jack embarks on a dangerous journey through the canyons and deserts, with the help of his faithful wolf and horse and a mysterious Indian. An epic showdown on the edge of Surprise Canyon decides love, justice, and the legacy of the Wild West.
