Clare Abshire and Henry DeTamble meet when Clare is 6 and Henry is 36 – but Henry is from the future, because he suffers from a rare genetic disorder: he spontaneously disappears from the present and travels through time, always naked, with no control over his destination or duration. Clare grows up in a wealthy family in Michigan, where as a little girl she meets the mysterious Henry who comes to her from the future and becomes her best friend, teacher and first love. Henry, on the other hand, only meets Clare when she is 28 – in a library in Chicago, where she works as a librarian.
