Essays and Articles, published as the fifth and final volume of the representative Works of Boris Pasternak in 5 volumes, represent a precious and indispensable crown of the entire edition. This book brings together the author's theoretical, aesthetic and memoir writings that illuminate his deep intellectual world, understanding of his own calling, and views on other greats of world and Russian literature.

The volume is divided into several thematically clearly profiled units. The chapter On Literature and Art brings Pasternak's philosophical and poetic reflections on the nature of creativity, while the section On Translation provides an exceptional insight into his rich translation work (he translated Shakespeare, Goethe, Rilke and Georgian poets) and into the theory of translation as a creative act. The section Contributions to biographies collects notes and portraits of comrades and contemporaries, while the focus of the book is the autobiographical essay People and situations, in which Pasternak maturely, warmly and from a distance evokes his own life path, friendships and the cultural and historical context of the first half of the 20th century.

The book is rounded off by an extensive and meticulous professional apparatus that gives this volume exceptional scientific and documentary value. At the end of the edition there is a comprehensive Study on the writer by the respected theoretician and editor Sveta Lukić, as well as rich Appendices with a detailed bibliography of Pasternak's books, an editorial Afterword and exhaustive Notes, which makes this book an invaluable source for all researchers and admirers of Pasternak's work.
