Roman počinje 1923. Protagonist, mladi velški aristokrat po imenu Augustine Penry-Herbert, otkriva tijelo mlade djevojke i netočno se sumnja da ima veze s njezinom nesretnom smrću. Augustin odlučuje napustiti Englesku i posjetiti daleke rođake u Njemačkoj. Zaljubljuje se u svoju rođakinju Mitzi usred uspona nacizma, uključujući i minhenski puč. Na kraju romana Mitzi, koja je izgubila vid, ulazi u samostan, a Augustin se vraća u Englesku.
