Elam Harnish, known as Burning Daylight, makes his fortune in the gold rush, but in the business world he realizes that money is not the source of true happiness. His love for Dede Mason changes his life.

Jack London's novel Burning Daylight depicts the life of Elam Harnish, a brave and capable adventurer who earned the nickname Burning Daylight for his inexhaustible energy and habit of starting the workday first. As an experienced prospector for gold in Alaska, he participates in the gold rush and, thanks to his perseverance, strength and resourcefulness, acquires a great fortune.

After his success in the wilderness, Elam goes to the big city and enters the world of finance. He becomes a wealthy entrepreneur who fights for power and business success, using the same determination with which he once survived in harsh regions. However, he gradually realizes that a life filled only with money, competition and conquest is not enough for true satisfaction.

A crucial moment in his life is his meeting with Dede Mason, an independent, sensible and strong woman who encourages him to reexamine his values. With her help, Elam discovers the importance of love, simplicity and inner peace.

The novel depicts the conflict between the harsh world of the struggle for wealth and the need for freedom and happiness. Through the character of Elam Harnish, London shows how a person can achieve great material success, but only by changing their own values can they find the true meaning of life.
