The book - monograph comes from the "Museums of the World" book edition and deals with the art stored in the National Museum in Tokyo, the largest art museum in Japan and one of the largest art museums in the world.

It is one of four museums managed by the National Institute for Cultural Heritage. The museum collects, preserves and displays an extensive collection of works of art and cultural objects from Asia, with an emphasis on ancient and medieval Japanese art and Asian art along the Silk Road. There is also a large collection of Greco-Buddhist art. The museum houses more than 110,000 cultural properties, including 89 that are Japanese national treasures, 319 Horyuji treasures, and 644 important cultural properties. In addition, the museum houses over 3,000 cultural properties donated by individuals and organizations, including 55 that are national treasures and 253 important cultural properties (as of March 2019). The museum also conducts research and organizes educational events related to its collection.

The museum consists of buildings: Honkan, which houses the Japanese gallery; Heiseikan and Hyokeikan, where special exhibitions are held; Toyokan, which houses the Asian gallery; The Horyu-ji Treasure Gallery, which houses important relics originally preserved in the Horyu Temple of Nara; Kuroda Memorial Hall, which houses a collection of works by the painter Kuroda Seiki; and research and information center. The museum is home to restaurants and shops, outdoor exhibits (including Kuromon), and a garden where visitors can enjoy seasonal views. Western art beyond jurisdiction.
