Diogenes is one of Šenoa's most mature historical works and his last completed historical novel. The story is set in Zagreb and Croatia in the mid-18th century, during the Habsburg rule, and masterfully depicts the world of political intrigue, corruption, court intrigues and the struggle for influence between the ban, royal councilors and local powerful people.
Through the story of Antun Janković and his conflict with the powerful banica Terezija Baćan, Šenoa creates a tense drama in which personal destinies, love, betrayal and the pursuit of justice are intertwined. The novel stands out with a rich gallery of characters – from cunning politicians and conspiratorial nobles to ordinary citizens – and a vivid depiction of Zagreb and provincial life at that time. Unlike Šenoa's earlier historical novels with great battles and panoramic scenes, Diogenes is more introspective and analytical, with an emphasis on the psychology of the characters and the mechanisms of power.
This edition is part of the esteemed edition of the Collected Works of August Šenoa, published by Naklada knjižare Preporod in Zagreb during 1942–1943. The book is equipped with attractive and dynamic drawings by Andrija Maurović, which perfectly evoke the atmosphere of the 18th century and give the edition a special artistic charm. Maurović's illustrations on the cover and within the text make this copy a real feast for the eyes and ideal for collectors.
With their topicality, the themes of abuse of power, corruption and the struggle of the common man against the Diogenes system still seem surprisingly fresh today. Šenoa's rich storytelling, precise style and deep knowledge of historical events make this book an indispensable classic of Croatian literature.
