The first edition was published in Ljubljana by the Academic Publishing House in 1936. It is interesting that Krleža was afraid of Croatian censorship at the time and first published two songs in Ljubljanski zvon. A little unsure of the magnificence of his new work, Krleža read Ballads to his friend Pavlo Gregorić before publication, who immediately recognized the extraordinary nature of the work, as well as Krsto and Branka Hegedušić, who cried when Krleža read Na mukah to her for the first time.
