Ive Mažuran, ugledni istoričar, detaljno opisuje razvoj Đakova kroz vekove, sa posebnim osvrtom na ključne ličnosti poput biskupa Josipa Jurja Štrosmajera, koji je dao izgraditi čuvenu đakovačku katedralu. Monografija takođe ističe kulturno-istorijske i ljudske vrednosti grada, predstavljajući savremeno Đakovo i njegov potencijal zasnovan na bogatoj tradiciji i kulturi.​

Tekst u knjizi je višejezičan, na hrvatskom, njemačkom i engleskom jeziku. Prvo izdanje je objavljeno 2000. godine, a zatim proširena i revidirana izdanja 2003. godine.

Knjiga je obogaćena fotografijama Marina Topića i drugih autora, koje vizuelno dočaravaju ljepotu i značaj ovog slavonskog grada.​
