The novel is inspired by the life and work of Doctor Felix Kersten, Heinrich Himmler's personal therapist during World War II.
Kessel portrays Kersten as a man of extraordinary medical skills, whose "miraculous hands" not only cure physical ailments but also play a key role in saving the lives of many victims of the Nazi regime. The plot focuses on Kersten's moral dilemma – using his influence with Himmler to alleviate the suffering of prisoners, while simultaneously navigating dangerous political and ethical terrain. Kessel's novel combines historical accuracy with dramatic narrative, exploring themes of humanity, power, and moral compromise in extreme circumstances.
