Als Naturforscher, hervorragender Illustrator und Autor verfolgte Seton Tiere in freier Wildbahn oder in freien Nationalparks, zeichnete sie, fotografierte sie und zeichnete jedes Detail ihres Verhaltens auf.

Nur auf der Grundlage dokumentierter Daten konnte er gekonnt eine interessante Geschichte gestalten. Er wollte, dass Kinder die Natur in ihrer ganzen Wahrheit akzeptieren, ohne die üblichen zuckerhaltigen Zusätze.
