Rdeči album

Pankrti

The third studio album by Slovenian punk legends, the best-selling, politically provocative and energetic peak of their career.

Rdeči album (Red Album) is the third studio album by the Slovenian punk-rock band Pankrti from Ljubljana, released in 1984 for ZKP RTVL. It was recorded in August/September 1983 at the "Akademik" studio in Ljubljana, and produced by Igor Vidmar and Pankrti themselves. The album became their biggest commercial success and one of the key punk works in the former Yugoslavia.

The title is an ironic play on words – an allusion to The Beatles's White Album, where the color red symbolizes communism. Pankrti, who presented themselves as "the first punk band behind the Iron Curtain", once again showed their provocativeness and social edge here. The album contains 12 songs and lasts about 40 minutes. The sound is mature punk-rock with strong guitars, energetic rhythms and charismatic vocals by Peter Lovšin.

Their biggest hit is a cover of the Italian revolutionary communist song "Bandiera Rossa" (Red Flag), which became their most famous song and caused controversy – some saw it as support, others as irony and criticism of the system. Other notable songs are "Slavni razglas", "Gora", "Volkovi", "Sarajevo 1984" (with topics that were current at the time), "Vodja", "Lokalne pizde", "Udarnik sle" and "Lov". The lyrics by Greg Tomac and Peter Lovšin are full of sarcasm, criticism of authority, everyday life and political hypocrisy.

The album opened the doors to larger venues and solidified Pankrt's status as one of the most important Yugoslav punk bands. It was critically acclaimed for its energy, authenticity and courage. In 2023, a limited vinyl reissue was released on red 180g vinyl with remastering, demonstrating its enduring relevance.

The Red Album is a classic example of how punk in Yugoslavia was more than just music – it was an attitude, a provocation, and a chronicle of the times. For fans of real, engaged punk, it still sounds fresh and powerful. A must-have record in every ex-YU punk collection!
