Razvoj urbanih cjelina i arhitekture na području Slavonije od XVI do XIX stoljeća
A study of Slavonian settlements and architecture from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century, linking spatial change with historical circumstances and regional architectural heritage.
Andre Mohorovičić’s Razvoj urbanih cjelina i arhitekture na području Slavonije od XVI do XIX stoljeća addresses the historical development of Slavonian settlements and architecture. Its chronological scope spans centuries of political and social change, from the Ottoman period through urban development under Habsburg rule to the transformations of the nineteenth century.
The subject connects two scales of spatial enquiry: the urban whole, encompassing the organisation and growth of settlements, and architecture as an integral part of that whole. This perspective brings together historical circumstances, spatial organisation and architectural form. Settlements emerge as products of a long development in which successive layers are extended, altered and interwoven.
The publication will interest readers seeking a historical understanding of Slavonian towns and settlements and a broader cultural context for the region’s architecture. It connects architectural and urban history with art history and local studies.
Published in 1978, the study also forms part of the historiography of Slavonian architectural heritage, offering a point of reference for earlier scholarly approaches to its investigation and appreciation.
