Der Roman Maria Vecera (1930) ist eine historische Geschichte, die auf der tragischen Liebesbeziehung zwischen dem österreichischen Kronprinzen Rudolf und Baronin Maria Vecera basiert, die 1889 mit ihrem Tod auf Schloss Mayerling endete.

Smešten u Beču 1880-ih, roman prati Rudolfa, tridesetogodišnjeg naslednika Habzburške dinastije, dok se bori sa brakom bez ljubavi, političkim pritiscima svog oca, cara Franca Jozefa, i sopstvenim idealima slobode.

U potrazi za smislom, Rudolf upoznaje sedamnaestogodišnju Mariju, zadivljujuću i strastvenu devojku, i njihova ljubav brzo postaje opsesija. Roman istražuje njihove unutrašnje sukobe, društvene norme koje ih ograničavaju i nemogućnost bekstva od sudbine. Anet kombinuje istorijske činjenice sa romantičnim stilom, stvarajući atmosferu intrige i tragične neizbežnosti.

Njihove smrti, prikazane kao moguće ubistvo-samoubistvo, ostaju obavijene misterijom, a dvor prikriva događaje. Anetov portret Majerlinga naglašava strast, sukob između dužnosti i želje i tragičnu sudbinu dvoje ljubavnika, čineći roman snažnim prikazom ljubavi i žrtve u istorijskom kontekstu.
