Obstacles (1905) is a novel that depicts personal and social obstacles in Croatian bourgeois life. The central theme is the conflict of ideals, love, and duty with social norms, moral expectations, and class barriers.
Tito Dorčić follows the tragic fate of the son of a fisherman from Senj, who is sent by his father to study law in Vienna. Torn between family tradition, social expectations and his own nature, Tito experiences an inner breakdown and ruin.
The main character comes to an environment where violence, greed, and conflicts between people reign, and gradually becomes involved in the fight against injustice.
