A 1938 novel that was made into a film of the same name in 1940, starring Bette Davis and Charles Boyer.
Rachel Field's novel is based on the true story of her great-aunt Henriette Deluzy-Desportes, a French governess who fell in love with the Duc de Praslin, her employer. When Praslin's wife was murdered, Deluzy-Desportes was involved. The scandal contributed to political turmoil before the French Revolution of 1848, which overthrew King Louis Philippe I.
