Der Roman Eclipse at Noon ist eine der eindringlichsten politischen Fiktionen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Es beschreibt das Schicksal eines idealistischen Bolschewisten, der Opfer der Schreckensherrschaft Stalins wurde.

Die Hauptfigur Rubaschew wurde 1938 inhaftiert und gezwungen, „Verbrechen gegen den Staat“ zu gestehen, die er nicht begangen hatte. Aber in seinem Kopf weiß er, dass er schuldig ist, weil er für ein System gearbeitet hat, das so viel Leid verursacht hat. Der Roman basiert auf der persönlichen Erfahrung des Autors als Gefangener und den berüchtigten Stalin-Prozessen. Es bedeutete auch Koestlers Bruch mit der kommunistischen Ideologie.
