Jean d'Agreve: Historija jedne velike ljubavi

Eugène-Melchior de Vogüé

Jean d’Agreve (1897) is a novel by French writer Eugène-Melchior de Vogüé about tragic love, duty, and sacrifice. Set in an Alpine landscape, it combines psychological analysis, romanticism, and moral drama.

Jean d'Agreve: The History of a Great Love is the Croatian edition of the famous novel by the French writer, diplomat and literary critic Eugène-Melchior de Vogüé. It was published immediately after the end of World War I and in a year of great political changes in Croatia and Central Europe. At a time when the domestic audience showed strong interest in French literature, Vogüé's novel was recognized as a representative work of psychological and sentimental prose.

The plot is set in the French Alpine environment, where a love story marked by a conflict between feelings, social obligations and personal moral principles develops. At the center of the novel is Jean d'Agreve, the protagonist whose life decisions shape the tension between love passion and a sense of duty. The author relies less on external events and more on the psychological development of the characters, their internal doubts and emotional conflicts.

Vogüé belongs to a generation of French writers who combined the realist tradition of the 19th century with a new interest in psychology and the inner life of the individual. As a literary critic, he played an important role in introducing Western Europe to Russian writers such as Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, and this interest in moral and psychological issues is also visible in his most famous novel.

The work is characterized by an elegant style, lyrical descriptions of nature, and a pronounced emotional atmosphere. The Alpine landscape is not only the backdrop to the plot, but also reflects the moods and inner states of the protagonists. It is precisely the combination of psychological analysis, romantic themes, and moral questions that made Jean d'Agreve one of the most widely read French novels of its time.
