Traum in Louisiana

Traum in Louisiana

Louis Bromfield

Louis Bromfield's epic historical romance novel is set in occupied New Orleans during the American Civil War. Wartime intrigue, greed, and turbulent passions intertwine throughout the conflict between the North and the South.

“Traum in Louisiana” (originally titled Wild Is the River) is a dramatic and atmospheric historical novel by Louis Bromfield, set in 1862, when Union forces under General Benjamin Butler have occupied New Orleans. The setting of the sultry, decadent, and dangerous Southern city becomes a stage for the clash of opposing armies, as well as completely different worldviews, cultures, and moral principles.

The story follows Union officer Major Tom Wyne, who arrives from the cold North and is soon drawn into the exotic and seductive rhythm of New Orleans. Although engaged to a dignified Northern girl, Agnes, Tom succumbs to the charms of the local Creole beauty, Baroness de Clagny. The conflict between duty and passion is further complicated when Agnes herself arrives in town to find her fiancé, but in the chaos of the war-torn city, she herself is exposed to dangers, intrigues, and unexpected feelings for another man.

Louis Bromfield masterfully captures the tense atmosphere of the occupied South, where honesty and honor melt under the pressure of war profiteering, greed, and moral collapse. Through rich descriptions of the Creole aristocracy and military turmoil, the novel delivers a layered drama about the transformation of human characteristics in extraordinary circumstances.
