Njemačka književnost
A comprehensive overview of German literature from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. The book presents a thorough analysis of literary periods, leading authors, and stylistic movements within a European context.
The work German Literature (SNL, Zagreb, 1986)—produced under the editorship of Academician Viktor Žmegač and co-authored by Zdenko Škeb and Ljerka Sekulić—stands as a seminal publication in the fields of Croatian German studies and literary scholarship. The book offers a comprehensive and systematic chronological overview of the German literary heritage—ranging from the earliest Old High German texts and medieval epics, through Humanism, the Baroque, and the Enlightenment, to German Classicism, Romanticism, Modernism, and the contemporary currents of the 20th century. In addition to providing detailed insight into the work of key authors (such as Goethe, Schiller, Kafka, Mann, and Brecht), the book is distinguished by exceptional methodological rigor. The authors combine literary-historical, comparative, and literary-theoretical approaches, situating German literature within a broader European social and cultural context. The book is designed as an essential university textbook for students of German studies and comparative literature, as well as a major reference work for researchers and enthusiasts of European literary history.
